Maximize Your HSA: Steps to Make the Most of Your Contribution Window

Deposit Products

Your Health Savings Account (HSA) offers a smart and efficient way to build both health and financial security. We believe in helping you leverage every available advantage, including making the most of your HSA contributions throughout the year.

Know Your Limits (and Don’t Leave Them on the Table)

For Michigan-eligible HSAs, the annual contribution limits for 2026 are:

  • $4,400 for self-only (individual) HDHP coverage.
  • $8,750 for family HDHP coverage.
  • A “catch-up” contribution of $1,000 is allowed for those age 55+.

If you're eligible and haven't contributed fully, now is a good time to do so.

Four Steps to Maximize Your Contribution Before Year End

  1. Confirm eligibility. Make sure you’re enrolled in a qualified high-deductible health plan (HDHP) and meet any other HSA eligibility requirements (such as not being enrolled in Medicare, not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return, etc.).
  2. Calculate how much you’ve contributed so far. Check your year-to-date contributions including employer seed or contributions.
  3. Schedule one last contribution or set up automatic payroll deduction. If you have room left under the annual limit, you can make an additional deposit before year-end — or arrange a final payroll deduction.
  4. Keep your receipts and records. While you don’t have to spend HSA funds in the same year you contribute, you’ll want to track qualified medical expenses so you can reimburse yourself tax-free later.

Why Year-End Matters

  • You will decrease your taxable income for the year by making contributions up to the permitted limit.
  • Unused funds carry over yearly, remain tax-free, and can be used at any time.
  • The earlier you contribute, the more time your funds have to potentially grow (especially if you invest them).
  • You’ll enter next year ready to go, with fewer things left for later and increased assurance in how you manage your finances and health.
